The Family that Serves Together...

Today we are beginning a month of service as a family.  (Think of it as a month of trick or treating, minus the tricking.)  I've wanted to do more service with the little ones for a long time, but finding an organization or a project that can be done with three children under 5 was sort of a stretch.  To resolve that difficulty we created our own family service chain.  Each link has an act of service written on the inside, and as we do them we will be "linked" together as a family in service.  :)  Some of the service will for those outside of our home, such as taking a surprise treat to someone, and some are things we can do for each other, like making Lettie laugh.

We followed the counsel of one of our Apostles, and prepared spiritually for giving service by rereading King Benjamin's sermon in the Book of Mormon, specifically Mosiah 2:17, which tells us "when ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God."  The children were already excited to read about King Benjamin because of General Conference, since he is the prophet the people gathered in tents to hear.  (It's their favorite Conference tradition, and you can see a great artist's rendering of it here, in the article, "The Story of the Book of Mormon".)  Knowing that service was something he particularly taught about has made them even more excited for our month of service.

Our hope is that by lifting the burdens of others our own will seem lighter, and we will find greater joy in serving our Savior.  I'll be posting periodically on how and what we're doing, and please, feel free to join us!  We would love to be uplifted by your wonderful experiences as well.

This is a special month of service for your family - for sure. Thinking about one another and others always makes the days brighter. I'm proud of your family commitment!!
